Welcome to Our Class!
In first grade, we are learning about some important concepts that are foundational to many 'down-the-road' understandings.
Fun times in First Grade! |
In Reading we focus on the Daily 5 framework for practicing Reading to Self, Working on Writing, Word Works, Listening to Reading, and Reading to Someone; focusing on these components help develop literacy in authentic and meaningful ways. In Writing we implement writing workshop, where students engage in writing that interests them and practicing strategies that AUTHORS (not unlike themselves) utilize in their writing. In Mathematics we use Number Talks to develop number sense and practice mental math; we are also using Cognitively Guided Instruction to help students develop strategies that make them better mathematicians. In Science students are learning about concepts such as, seasons, weather, lights and shadows, water and its many forms, inventors, magnets, plants, and sound. In Social Studies, students focus on folk songs and patriotic songs, historical figures (i.e. Harriet Tubman, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark), and special topics in economics. Students practicing the skills that are essential to our Daily 5 framework: Read to Self and Word Works (below).
